OUR BANDS!
NHBCOS SYMPHONIC WINDS
This band is our top organization and numbers between 80-85 members. They meet on Thursday evenings for two hours from 7 'til 9 at the Caņon School. You are invited to attend any rehearsal as they are all open rehearsals. If you already play a band instrument, bring it along and join in the fun. There is no charge for a one-time guest. (For membership in the group, we do ask for a brief audition in order to maintain the level at which we currently perform.)
NHBCOS CONCERT BAND
The Concert Band is our most advanced daytime band (intermediate) and usually boasts between 45-50 members with a very nicely-balanced instrumentation. This band meets at First Evangelical Free Church...on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8:45-10:45 a.m. We would welcome you into our 'concert band stars' family with open arms.
NHBCOS BEGINNERS
You need absolutely no prior music knowledge to belong to this band. You read correctly, no prior music experience. All you need is the desire and a reasonable amount of time to practice. We'll then take you as far as you desire. This is part of the essence of the New Horizons Band program. Please be in touch with us quickly if you are interested in this program. We will just be starting another new class and we'd love to have others along for the exciting ride. That being said, if you or someone you knows is interested in a January 2012 class, have them be in touch with us ASAP...634-2463 or enuccio@aol.com. Meeting time(s) for this class tba.
NHBCOS INTERMEDIATES
This semester it is our goal to schedule the Intermediates--a group that will again be instructed by Ed. Unfortunately, in order for this to happen, we will not have a Beginner group, day or night, unless the number of folks interested reaches an acceptable amount. If you know of folks who are wanting to join a class of raw beginners (or of folks who are interested in switching instruments), please contact us to get your name on the list. This will allow for Night Intermediates to meet from 6:30-7:30 (or later) Wednesday evenings at Caņon. The Intermediate groups are beyond beginners but not ready for our Concert and Symphonic Bands.
NHBCOS CAŅON WINDS
In view of the resignation of its director, this band is on hiatus. Meanwhile, if you are between the ages of 18 and 39, please contact jeremy.vanhoy@coloradocollege.edu. for participation in a similar organization.
NHBCOS KICKS JAZZ
The Kicks Band is our 18-piece jazz band. A prerequisite for membership in this band is membership in a core band and is by audition only. The Kicks Band meets at our long-time home, First Evengelical Free Church--but from 7:00 to 9:00 on Monday nights. This band has played numerous concerts and public performances and often receives donations for their appearances.
In order to always be available with a full complement of players, on occasion we select a few 'floater' players to cover unexpected absences at a time when a performance arises.
NHBCOS JAZZ TRIOS
The rhythm section from the Kicks Band makes up a vibrant addition to the New Horizons Band of Colorado Springs. Our NHBCOS JAZZ TRIO has played many public performances...and fortunate for all of NHBCOS, the 3 gentlemen who play in this group play for donations only and then turn all the $$ over to the Friends organization for support anywhere needed. They are extremely benevolent and they represent us with amazing aplomb. (We applaude Thomas T. (leader and piano); John M., Bass Guitar; and Bruce N., Drums.)
Often, the Jazz Trio is replaced by another trio including Pianist, Thomas T. playing the Classical Guitar but also including a flugelhorn player from our Concert Band. Jeff A. is doing a wonderful job and adds a whole lot to the variety aspect of the group. The group is made complete by the addition of Helayne T. who is proving herself as quite a nice player. The NHBCOS LATIN JAZZ TRIO is a great new group that you'll love to hear, we promise.
Also in the picture is Christina VC on Flute (w/Thomas and Helayne). This is our NHBCOS SWING TRIO that seems to get lots of exposure these days.
The past few semesters, Thomas T. added a new 'class' that of Jazz Improv. Students included Rebecca A. - Flute, Jeff A. - Trumpet/Flugelhorn, Christina VC (T-Bone), and Helayne T., String Bass. This class has progressed nicely and even demonstrated their expertise at several of our our most recent concerts. If you have an interest in joining, all you need do is become a member of a core group in NHBCOS and then show up on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of FEF. Watch this site for updates regarding this class. (Thomas will screen applicants for this class in order to eliminate folks who do not have the necessary theory background.) As an aside, Thomas (just this past semester) began familiarizing this group with music from the Dixieland genre. They had a wonderful time with it and are just now making great strides. It will be fun to hear them in concert--soon!
NHBCOS CHAMBER GROUPS
We now have a number of Chamber Groups working routinely...as well as sections meeting on their own in private locations. Saxophones (Concert Band group that meets in a home, Jeannine B.), etc. A Brass Quintet from Symphonic & Concert Bands meets in Black Forest, Jeff A. We are very excited that these folks are so enthusiastic they would spend time on their horns away from regular rehearsals. Our newest group works with Ed (since clarinet is his expertise!) and it is the Clarinet Choir that will again meet in our break room at Caņon on alternating Tuesday nights.
We encourage these additional meetings and hope this info will promote more interest within NHBCOS (and encourage new memberships in our New Horizons groups, as well.)
